The word concho comes from a Spanish word, which means conch or seashell. Conchos are usually round or oval and they are used to embellish leather belts or they are linked together to create a belt. Conchos are also used to decorate horse bridles and jewelry such as bolo ties. The original conchos were silver dollars hammered into shape then stamped to create interesting patterns and slotted to accommodate the leather strap of the belt to pass through. Making concho belts is a longstanding tradition among the Navajo. Although well known for their well crafted conchos, they were not the first to make them. They earned from their Mexican neighbors and also possibly Plains tribes.

  • Colton Charley is the son of Thomas Charley, a renowned Navajo silversmith from New Mexico. Colton began learning the art of silversmithing from his father as a child. As the years progressed, Colton decided he wanted to forge his own career path, working for a time in retail then construction. Eventually, he returned to his family’s tradition of silver jewelry making, which is how he earns his living today. “I decided that its something I know and something I enjoy doing [. . .] I hope one of these days to pass this art[form] down to my own kids and keep the tradition alive.”
