Photographs of my family are printed on pieces of canvas. Around each photo I have beaded 4 colors, which correspond to 4 sacred stones, the 4 directions, 4 sacred plants -Corn, Beans, Squash and Tobacco - as well as the 4 mountains, which mark the boundaries of Dinétah (Navajo homeland). Each piece of canvas is sewn to the central weaving, the heart of the piece. Then I have lashed the resulting cross-shaped textile with twine to suspend it within a structure made from fallen tree branches, which represents a Navajo loom. In “The Four Directions” I am attempting to come to terms with questions relating to my identity as a half white, Navajo woman who was born and grew up away from Dinétah, in Minnesota. —Carolyn L. Carolyn L. Anderson, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation and an alumna of the University of Minnesota, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in studio art in 2006. She has exhibited her paintings and mixed media artwork alongside other Indigenous artists in several exhibits and is an experienced curator of Native American art. For 16 years, she worked for Birchbark Books in Minneapolis where she became a buyer of Native art and jewelry and in 2024, she became a business owner when she received a business loan through the Mni Sota Fund to launch her online shop, Old Cedar Native Arts.
