This mixed media piece was inspired by a poem by Heid E. Erdrich from her book of poetry, Cell Traffic (University of Arizona Press, 2012).
The image of the mother and baby was derived from a photograph taken of my mother and I, shortly after my birth.

Carolyn L. Anderson, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation and an alumna of the University of Minnesota, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in studio art in 2006. She has exhibited her paintings and mixed media artwork alongside other Indigenous artists in several exhibits and is an experienced curator of Native American art. For 16 years, she worked for Birchbark Books in Minneapolis where she became a buyer of Native art and jewelry and in 2024, she became a business owner when she received a business loan through the Mni Sota Fund to launch her online shop, Old Cedar Native Arts.
