“This image is based on a photo of my great-grandma spinning wool for her Navajo rug. She is surrounded by a vine of squash referencing the Navajo community where she is from called Nageezi, which means squash or pumpkin patch. The Los Angeles skyline is behind her, which is where her daughter/my grandmother moved to in order to find work, which greatly impacted the trajectory of our family’s story. I am expressing that my body and personality have resulted from an accumulation of effects from my family’s lived experiences and the enormous impact of colonization. I am also acknowledging that the thread of our story is just a piece of a much grander tapestry that was created and is sustained by the forces of nature.” —Carolyn L. Anderson
